Despite the continued challenges and uncertainties brought about by COVID-19, as announced earlier, the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) plans to go ahead with the 35th edition from October 24 through November 2.

As always, TIFF remains committed to doing our part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The film industry is seeing many signs of revival, and we look forward to bringing filmmakers and audiences together to celebrate the best new work during the festival.

TIFF is now open for submissions from April 20 through July 15, 2022 via the festival website. As one of the leading film festivals in Asia, TIFF showcases premieres of films created by established filmmakers as well as outstanding works by up-and-coming directors from around the world in a variety of sections. Last year, TIFF implemented a number of changes after reexamining our approach to programming, and reorganized the overall structure of sections in addition to moving the festival’s main venue to the cinema-rich Hibiya-Yurakucho-Ginza area of Tokyo.

In our main Competition, we are accepting submissions from around the globe for films that have not yet been released in Japan (Japan Premiere), including documentary and animation features.

The Asian Future section will highlight films by up-and-coming Asian directors, including those from Japan and the Middle East, who have directed no more than three feature-length films.

Details on the festival’s other sections will be announced at a later date.

International Competition Section
The main Competition section is the core of the festival and aims to support promising filmmakers who will play leading roles in the industry, as well as contribute to the enrichment of cinematic artistry and international cultural exchange. Films from around the globe that have not yet been released in Japan compete for the top prize, the Tokyo Grand Prix. Features completed after January 1, 2022, are eligible for selection by TIFF, and undergo a rigid review process. During the event, invited guests who are involved in the films will appear onstage for Q & A sessions after the screenings to enhance interactions with the audience. Last year, 1,533 films were submitted from 113 countries and regions.
